The Welder Wildlife Foundation herbarium is one of the most complete collections of the flora of the Coastal Bend in existence. Most of the specimens in the collections were acquired and prepared by the late Fred. B. Jones, an amateur botanist who authored Flora of the Texas Coastal Bend in 1975. The collection contains approximately 4,607 individual specimens from 1,400 species of flowering plants, 217 of which are grass species. The collection contains one endangered species, blacklace cactus (Echinocereus reichenbachii var. albertii), and one rare species, babybonnet (Coursetia axillaris).
