The Cottam House

Enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Welder Wildlife Refuge where the sights and sounds of south Texas and its abundant wildlife replace the noise and busyness of city life. Turn off your cell phone and step back in time...

Nestled in a grove of live oak and hackberry, and reflective of the Spanish-Mediterranean style architecture of the Foundation, the Cottam House provides a wonderful base from which to explore one of the nation’s largest private wildlife refuges. Stepping outside their door, guests will connect with a biologically rich south Texas landscape and enjoy the solitude to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Three comfortable bedrooms each with private bath, a full kitchen, and spacious living room provide the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. The house is available for overnight stays for up to 8 people.

The Cottam House, built in 1956, served as the residence of the Welder Wildlife Foundation’s first director Dr. Clarence Cottam. Dr. and Mrs. Cottam enjoyed attracting wildlife to their front yard, and Mrs. Cottam, being somewhat of an accomplished artist, sketched many of the species found in their yard and on the Refuge. In 1974, Dr. Lynn Drawe was hired as Assistant Director of the Welder Wildlife Foundation, and he was subsequently named Director in 1999. He and his wife Kay, and their two children Pam and Kim, lived in the home until his retirement in 2008. Dr. and Mrs. Drawe enjoyed attracting and watching many of the many bird and mammal species that trek through the yard at the Cottam House.
